Local Interest

With so much to see and to do it is difficult to know what to write about, but if you have a look at all the 'Uncovered' websites you will end up with a fair idea of what the island has to offer.
Kardamena is well placed to get around the island easily and there are many excursions starting from the village. If the idea of bus or car doesn't appeal there are lots of options to go places by boat.
Nissyros, the volcanic island, is very close by and the Castle of Antimachia is within walking distance.

0042Kos Town

Kos town is the most visited place on the island and is wonderfully busy and cosmopolitan with a beautiful harbour and lots of shops, cafes and tavernas. It is easily accessible by public transport from Kardamena.
From there, a visit to the Asklepion, the ancient hospital, is very much worth doing.

If you decide to hire your own transport and get around independently, take a camera as the views driving up the mountain slopes are stunning.

From looking over the city itself to heading up to the villages nestling on the sides of Mount Dikeos, the vista that opens in front of you is amazing.

Kefalos, at the southern tip of the island, is interesting and indeed very different from the rest of the island with a wilder landscape and beautiful seas and harbour.

The salt flats at Tigaki and wetlands in Psalidi, which provide sanctuary to both migratory and permanent residents, are especially interesting early in the season. If you are lucky, in May, the flamingoes will still be here.

0001Excursions Kardamena

There are regular ferries from Mastihari to Kalymnos. Kalymnos is the sponge diving island and you may chance upon the boats returning laden with sponges. Kalymnos has a small but beautifully presented archaeological museum which alone is worth making the trip for.
The ride over, be it by the small fast Kalymnos Star, or the slower A.N.E.M car ferry is lovely. Always be on the watch for dolphins.

Mastihari itself is one of the quietest and most laid back places on the island with its sandy beach lined with tavernas and cafes.
